"Advertisement for the Royal Grand Menagerie. Established in 1773 at Exeter Exchange on the Strand, the menagerie was originally a competitor to that at the Tower of London and, indeed, the Leverian Museum. This was in the heyday of public curiosity for discoveries from the New World. Although the title was misleading, there was no royal patronage whatsoever. Stefan Polito inherited it from his brother Giovanni, though from about 1814 it was managed by Edward Cross. The menagerie was open to the public and toured Europe throughout the summers, which this broadside advertises. The animals on tour included a zebra from Ethiopia, three lions, a Bengal tiger, a panther and cougar from America, two leopards, hyenas, snakes, crocodiles, birds, ocelots and many others. Among them is a kangaroo, seemingly the first to be shown in France. The text describes its pouch and initial discovery by James Cook: “Venant de la Nouvelle-Hollande: c‘est le premier apporte en France. Sa forme est extraordinaire. La Femelle a au-dessous de son estomac un poche ou son petit entre et sort volonte pour y prendre sa nourriture et son repos. C’est le capitaine Cook qui l’a intoduit en Europe.”... The ink annotations suggest that this is a proof copy. Not least “cameleon vivant” has been crossed out with the terse remark “morte” written beside it. The remaining annotations give further information regarding each animal listed ... A copy of this broadside, in a private collection, reflects some of the changes here."--Adapted from acquisitions documentation.
