Folkloric recording: REEL 2720/41/46-47. Conversation: - 1. Recounts how Harry Knox was injured by a falling tree limb, how sharpening saws is a skilled and difficult job, how digging potatoes is hard work, making wedges, mauls and gads, how his father was a metalworker, explains his religion a nd his parents' beliefs and their attendance at church once a month at Backwater and at school a Presbyterian minister visited every 3 months, how as a child he said the Lord's prayer every night, though interested in religion he found the Bible full of lies, discusses the problem of God allowing suffering. 2. Song: Did you ever see the devil with his wooden spade and shovel (parody of "Flowers of Edinburgh"; whistling then lilting). 3. Conversation: recalls jokes & stories about Jack Wilson & Jim's Dad, how cantankerous his father was, how Tucker Gully got its name, the recipe for making honey beer, though most folks did not keep bees he recalls robbing beehives as a boy, folklore concerning bees, describes old Harry Lowe, how he made axe handles, how to build with timber slabs and sawing techniques.
