The collection primarily comprises tins and small envelopes from the estate of Sidney Nolan. Inscribed with "Central Australia 1948", these containers originally housed 35 mm negatives from Sidney Nolan's trip through Central Australia. Note that the negatives themselves are held by the estate of Lady Mary Nolan and do not form part of the National Library of Australia's Nolan collections. Damian Smith obtained the containers when he worked as the inaugural archivist for the Sidney Nolan estate. Smith was later assigned the publishing rights by Lady Mary Nolan to Sidney Nolan's photographs from the years 1949-1952. Also included in the collection is a post-production script for the film "Sidney Nolan: an Australian dream" - a co-production between Don Bennetts and the Australian Broadcasting Commission, 1982, which was given to Smith by Don Bennetts.
- Biography/History:
-
Curator, arts critic and director of Words For Art. From 1996-1999, Damian Smith was archivist for the estate of Sidney Nolan, and has curated several exhibitions on Nolan.
Painter, illustrator, printmaker and set designer, Sir Sidney Robert Nolan was born in Melbourne in 1917. During the 1940s, he was part of the circle of artists that art patrons John and Sunday Reed collected around them at their home, Heide, in Victoria. He was also associated with the Angry Penguins, an artistic and literary avant-garde group. He is perhaps best known for his mythologising of the story of Ned Kelly in a series of paintings created during the 1940s, now in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia. Knighted in 1981, he died in 1992.
