MS 2434 comprises a bound volume compiled by Charles Tait containing "An index of principal actors, musicians, plays & concerts from the year 1885 to 1933", with annotations. The collection also comprises the "J.C.W. business” letterbook, ca. 1899, filed in seven plastic folders accompanied by the original index volume. There is some loose correspondence written by Nellie Melba, undated, (photocopies), George Coppin, 1877 and 1879, and George Musgrove, 1888.
Legal material in the collection comprises an 1891 indenture between the Bank of New South Wales, Princess Theatre Co. Ltd. and James Cassius Williamson. Among the other papers are a handwritten note relating to "Bernhardt’s Australian tour" initialled J.C.W.; an account for costumes; the manuscript of a play called "Whizz bang"; a typescript titled "Grand opera in Australia" (author not named); and, "Précis of the Australian theatre" by H.A. Bowden (1 box, 3 fol. boxes).

Executive and theatrical director. Charles Tait was born at Castlemaine, Victoria in 1869. He commenced employment with Allan’s Music Warehouse, Melbourne, as an office boy in 1884. In 1903 he founded Tait’s Concert Bureau. With four of his brothers Tait became a partner in theatrical venture, J. and N. Tait Limited. The firm merged with J.C. Williamson Ltd. in 1920. Charles Tait retained his association with Allan's, becoming a company executive. He died in Melbourne in 1933.
