The collection contains Party records including minutes of the Sydney Branch for 1922, speeches from the Central Committee Plenum and Political Committee Meetings for 1945-1948, speeches and reports of the 15th National Congress, 1948; and Central Committee correspondence (1946-1948) with parties overseas. For the remainder, the material is from the National Union of Australian University Students, International Union of Students publications and papers relating to the 3rd and 4th World Student Congress, Australian Student Labor Federation minutes (1952-1954) and newsletters (1952-1959), and publications, correspondence and minutes from the Sydney University Labor Club (1947-1949), Melbourne University Labor Club and the Radical Club of the University of Queensland. Other publications, including those from Australian Student Christian Movement, International Student Relief, the Eureka Youth League, and the Victorian Fabian Society are with the papers.

The Communist Party of Australia was founded in 1920. In 1963 a Peking-oriented group led by E.F. Hill broke away from the Party to become the Communist Party of Australia (Marxist-Leninist). A further group led by Pat Clancy and Bill Brown, split from the main party in 1970 to form the Socialist Party of Australia.
