The collection includes views of Port Moresby and surrounding areas; the supply vessel Vailala and her captain; various river scenes, houses at Kapuri and Popo; Papuan family groups; Papuan warriors dressed in full regalia; Papuan men in masks and headresses; oil rigs, machinery and equipment; and oil company staff members at social gatherings and a sports day. Accompanying documents include a letter from the Anglo-Persian Oil Company to Colley with details of his appointment and employment conditions; a reference for Colley from the Anglo-Persian Oil Company at the completion of his two year service; and a newspaper clipping about new oil company employees arriving in Popo.

Oil exploration work in Papua and New Guinea was conducted by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company on behalf of the government of the Commonwealth of Australia between 1920 and 1929.
Joseph Henry Pomeroy Colley was employed by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company as a wireless operator in Papua between September 1925 and September 1927. He was stationed at the village of Popo where he communicated twice daily with Port Moresby six days a week for two years and was responsible for the maintenance of the communication equipment. He was also a keen amateur photographer who developed and printed his own film--Information provided in acquisitions documentation.
