- Summary:
-
A poster promoting the ill-fated long-distance race at unlimited speeds for drivers on Northern Territory's Stuart Highway. It attracted 142 international competitors with high powered sports cars, and included Sir Jack Brabham and Peter Brock. A red Ferrari F-40 (similar to that in the poster) was involved in a fatal crash during the race. It was driven by a Japanese dentist who was killed with his co-driver when they crashed into a checkpoint and also killed the two race officials stationed there. The race was the subject of a coronial inquiry and was not run again. The poster shows a fisheye view of a red sports car speeding along a straight paved road which leads to Ayers Rock / Uluru. The road is depicted with rapidly diminishing perspective and the horizon line is curved. The wildlife depicted on the outback roadside includes a crocodile.
