Albums contain photographs of South Africa including people, landscapes and buildings in and around Cape Town, Table Bay, the Cape of Good Hope and Simon's Town; and photographs of Ceylon, Madeira and St Helena. There are also many photographs taken in Nice, France where John Chester Jervis spent his retirement. The photographs taken in Nice include family portraits and photographs taken for photographic competitions. Originally from London, John Chester Jervis lived and travelled in Australia for many years and both albums include photographs taken in Australia during the 1860s.
Album 1312/1 has photographs of Melbourne including the Melbourne Exhibition of 1866, buildings including the Melbourne Post Office, State Library, Temple Court, the Congregational Church on Collins Street, The Melbourne Club and of Burke, Swanston and Collins Streets (p. 26-27); photographs of the Wimmera, Victoria including North Brighton Station, Longerenong Homestead and a school (p. 28-31); photographs of Tasmania including Hobart, Fern Gully and rainforest landscapes (p. 32-39); and photographs of Sydney including St Philip's Church, St Andrews Cathedral, Government House, Museum, Sydney University, Fort Denison, South Head, North Head, Trinity Church, Sydney viewed from the Domain and Parramatta River from Flagstaff Reserve (p. 40-41). Album 1312/2 has several photographs of an unidentified school in the Australian bush, ships docked in Melbourne, and photographs of horse riding, horse drawn carts and houses.
