The Citroën DS was selected by motoring experts and the public as the most beautiful classic car of the twentieth century. French designer Flaminio Bertoni's 'Goddess' is considered a work of art, a sculpture on wheels. Some even called it the Sydney Opera House of motoring. Released in October 1955 in Paris, France, the first DS19 to arrive in Australia stunned onlookers at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1956. Its most notable innovation was the suspension, allowing the car to go 'up and down'. But there were many more outstanding features that made it such a seductive car. The many DS models that came to this country from 1956 to 1975 have been as breathtaking as the landscapes they have traversed. From its early assembly at a factory in Melbourne to its resonance with architectural and creative professionals, the Goddess has endured. As Citroën celebrates a hundred years since it launched its first car, it is fitting to record the untold stories of the importers, distributors, owners, mechanics, racing drivers, restorers, artists and many more behind the story of the DS in Australia. With over 750 photographs, many never published before, 120 original illustrations and exhaustive research, the authors (Geoffrey Webber, Helen Walker and Mark Gordon) have given voice to a definitive history of the Citroën DS in this country, capturing the essence of this stunning design and engineering marvel. Geoffrey Webber is a retired architect and French car enthusiast. He has always been fascinated by the DS and after he retired in 2012 he finally found time to restore his own classic Citroën - a 1974 DS23 Pallas EFI Automatique. Helen Walker has an interest in design, photography and wildlife, and graduated from QUT with a degree in Industrial Design. Growing up with parents who owned French cars, including a DS, she now drives a Citroën C4. Mark Gordon is an information scientist and has been a Citroën DS aficionado since his mother insisted on his father buying an ID19 in around 1967. For Mark, the car is pure unadulterated art in the way it looks and the elegance of its engineering.
