- Biography/History:
-
The Northern Herald (Cairns, Qld.), 10 December 1919, page 38, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article147958137 (viewed September 2019), cites an advertisement clipped from the Boston 'Globe,' of September 18, 1919:- "Now is the time for everyone to drink 'Anzac' the delightful soft drink from hops. Full of tang, and has a snappy hop flavor. Made only by the Anzac Co., 60 Prentiss-street, Boston. Drink 'Anzac,' sold everywhere, by the glass, bottle, or case." Artwork of a full length Pierrot figure appears in some of the company's newspaper advertisements in 1920 (for example, The Evening Caledonian (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), 24 April 1920, page 4, https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/data/batches/vtu_fairbanks_ver02/data/sn97067598/00202197802/1920042401/0147.pdf, viewed September 2019). The Anzac Company is no longer listed in a Boston directory of 1922.
The "Protection of Word 'Anzac' Act 1920" set strict guidelines on the use of the word "Anzac" or any word resembling the word "Anzac" in commerce in Australia, but would not have applied in the United States.
