- Summary:
-
"Sydney Parkinson was the first European artist to set foot on Australian soil and was therefore among the first to portray the landscape, peoples and flora and fauna of the continent from direct observation. Employed by Joseph Banks as natural history draughtsman on board HMB Endeavour with James Cook's first Pacific voyage (1768-1771), Parkinson's industry on the Endeavour voyage was extraordinary; producing at least 1300 drawings or sketches, before his death at sea on 26 January 1771."--Information from acquisitions documentation.
- Biography/History:
-
On 10 June, 1770, Endeavour was damaged after striking a shoal off the Great Barrier Reef. The men of the Endeavour spent six weeks undertaking necessary repairs near a river mouth, later named Endeavour River, on the country of the Guugu Yimithirr. It was the longest period that they spent on Australian shores. While there, Banks and his team took a number of excursions and collected a large assemblage of Australian flora. It also gave Parkinson an opportunity to observe and record the unusual flora and fauna of the area and the marine life at Endeavour River.--Information from acquisitions documentation.
