-
The abstract photograms reproduced in this artist's book are black and white photographs made without a camera, made not by illuminating objects placed directly onto photographic paper, but by projecting an enlarged image from a negative constructed from various liquids or objects. The artist regards these images as accidents that he initiates, and in an introductory text (under headings for the darkroom, the photogram, and his old camera) suggests that these photograms, with their "huge blacks, big whites, and maybe a stretch of grey," distinct from actual photographs ("something we can all recognise and put a name to"), are less about "things as they are" or the "decisive moment," but about "imaging thoughts," or nature "convulsed into a kind of writing." For him, photograms are phantoms or dreams that deploy darkness and light to superimpose "the real and the unreal on each other." A single line of text beginning with an ellipsis precedes each of the 30 plates; the colophon acknowledges long looking at Jean Arp's Dreams and Projects (New York, 1952).
