Charles Maurice Yonge (1899-1986) studied forestry at Edinburgh University, becoming interested in zoology. On graduating he went to the Marine Biological Association at Plymouth and worked on oysters. In 1927 was offered the Balfour Studentship at Cambridge where a expedition to the Great Barrier Reef was being proposed. 8580-5s was allocated for a party of 12 for 13 months to study sea water plankton, the reef structure and corals. Yonge's wife Dr Martha Jane Lennox accompanied as the medical officer. In 1933 he became Professor of Zoology at Bristol University. He continued to travel, working on corals and molluscs. In 1944 he was appointed Regius Professor of Zoology at Glasgow University; shortly afterwards his wife died. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1946, made a CBE in 1954, retired in 1964 and knighted in 1967. He served on the Council of the Royal Society and awarded its Darwin medal in 1968. After retirement he lived in Edinburgh and continued his research and travels. He was the author of "A Year on the Great Barrier Reef" (1930); "Oysters" (1960).
