The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) was the Australian government body through which Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders were formally involved in the processes of government affecting their lives. ATSIC was established through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission Act 1989 (the ATSIC Act), which took effect on 5 March, 1990. The Commission aimed to ensure maximum participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in government policy formulation and implementation, to further indigenous economic, social and cultural development, and to promote indigenous self-management and self-sufficiency. ATSIC was formally abolished on 24 March, 2005.
