- See The Holy City, 1949. "Chapels, altars, and shrines now occupy the little hill of calvary and make it difficult for the pilgrim to realize that this was once the place golgotha-the most sacred rood in Christendom. Beneath the altar a silver disc indicates the place where the Cross stood. Between the years AD 327-36 the Emperor Constantine the Great erected magnificent buildings over the site of the Crucifixion. Though these were destroyed by Chosroes II of Persia in AD 614, and though other edifices subsequently erected suffered a similar fate through fire, earthquake, and enemies, Christian worship has continued here for over sixteen hundred years. After the taking of the Holy Land by the Crusaders in 1099, they erected the present building, which, except for weathering and restoration, still remains today".
