NORTH COAST RAILWAY.
Among the tenders opened on Monday by the
Tender Board of the Public Works Department
were those for the construction of. the third me
tion of the North Coast railway. Five prices
were received. The lowest tender was that of
Messeo. lRhys-Jones, Carter, and Co., Ltd., and
the amount of tlhitender was .£455,365 1ifs d.
The first section of this line of railway is now
in ceturse of construction. It runs from West
Maitland to Dungog, and is about 37 miles in
length. No. 2 section, for which tenders will be
called in the early part of April, will run from
Dungog to Gloucester, a distance of between 40
and 45 miles; and No. 3 section, for which the
tenders were opened on Monday, extends from
Gloucester to Tareo, a length of 44 miles. The
object of commencing Neos. 1 and 3 sections first
is to get a start at each end, and then get the
centre, or No. 9, section going. Thus all sections
will finish together,; for the length of each sec
tion is about the same, and the class of work is
similar. In the third section the principal rivers
which have to be crossed are the Manning and
tfie Avon.
The IRecfton mines (N.Z.) are idle on account
of the miners' union endorsing the recommen
dation that the men do not submit to an exami-s
nation for pnoumonimocosis. About 800 men
have ceasedl work. It is stated that'there will be
a crisis at the Taupiri mine. near Auckland.
The Cricket Board of Control will not grant a
conference on the question of the terms of play.
