A VICTIM OF METHYLATED SPIRITS.
It is very often easy to separate the drinker
of methylated spirits from the more ordinary
"drunks" in the police court docks. In fact,
there are some so practised that they can name
the liquor over which the victim has come to
grief. On Monday at the Central Police Court,
Sydney, the apperiance of otoe of the clock oc
cupants stomped him at once as a methylated
spirits drinker. [He was elderly, and his clear
cut featurrs and general address suggested a
one time acquaintanco with vastly differ'nt
surroundings and companionship. When his
name was called he dived rather than walked
to the dock front, wi:ch he grasped with des
poerate grip to steady himself. Every fibre
seemingly in his body shook with unnatural
exeitoment while his gaze flickered over the
court. It was a piteous spectacle, and the
man's condition suffered in contrast with that
of an opium-smoking Chinese in the court,
while the ordinary "topers" looked keen and
healthy beside him. The police said that the
aecused had heen in the habit of drink;ng
methylated spirits with several companions
old Sundays. When the magistrate ordered a
detention in an asylum the drinker felt his
way along the rails, aniT steppel out of the
clock with a rulsh and arms outstretched as if
hlie ore falling dow n abyss.
