Buildings "have gone up So rapidly of late
years in the south-eastern portion of the
town that the corporation has been entirely
unable to keep .pace with the settlement in
the way of providing streets and footpaths.
As a result, Barwon "ward Is In a much neg-
lected condition, and each winter the resi
dents of -the outlying parts find themselves
hemmed In with accumulated drainage and

BALLARAT, Tuesday
News was received to-day of the death, at
Kalgoorlie, West Australia, of Mr Isaac
Jonas, for many years a well known caterer
and restaurant proprietor in Ballarat. The
deceased at one time possessed considerable
wealth, but lost heavily during recent years
through mining speculations. He was a
large shareholder in the Sulleman Pasha
Company , Ballarat East, paying more than
£3 each for the scrip, which he had in his
possession when marketable at only a few
shillings.
At the City Court to-day Ernest Isaacs
was sentenced to three months' imprison
ment on a charge of being by night, without
lawful excuse, on (the premises, of David
Jones, of Lydlard-street. Accused, at 1
a.m., forced his way Into the house, nnd in
formed" Mrs.- Jones he wns the son of a ser
geant of. police, and bad Important business
