OBITUARY.
MR. LIONEL SAMSON.
On Friday morning, March 15, Mr.
Lionel Samson, an old and prominent
colonist of Western Australia, died at his
residence in Fremantle, at the ripe age of
79 years. For some time past Mr. Sam-
son's health had been very frail, and his
decease therefore, although widely la-
mented, will not occasion surprise. In
the earlier days of the colony Mr. Samson
took great interest and acted a prominent
part in all social and political questions
affecting the land of his adoption, and his
public conduct had for its high incentive
a sincere regard for the advancement and
general welfare of the colony. In busi-
ness he was full of enterprise, and of
surpassing honesty and integrity ; and
those who knew him intimately speak
highly of his kindliness in his family
and amongst his friends. The deceased
gentleman leaves a widow, three daugh-
ters and three sons surviving. His re-
mains were conveyed to their last resting
place on Saturday, the 16th inst. The
cortege, on leaving his late residence, pro-
ceeded along High Street, to the cemetery,
where the Hebrew burial service was read
by the Rev. Mr. Johnston, Congregational
Minister. The chief mourners were his
sons, Mr. Michael Samson and Mr. W.
Samson, with Mr. E. A. Stone, Mr. James
Roe, and Mr. James Manning. The pall
bearers were Sir L. S. Leake, Mr. Brown-
ing, Major Finnerty, Mr George Leake,
Mr. George Glyde, M.L.C., and Mr.
Francisco.
