Tho returns, so far as known, givo tho
following strength of parties :
Roiditos.: . 45
Bartonites .31
Independent .' ... 1
This makes a, total of 77 seats filled out
of tha 125 electorates (single). At tho
previous general election Mr. Reid polled
610 votes to Sir Henry Parkes' 47S votes.
In tho above list the letter "M." in
parenthesis after a candidate's name stands
for "Ministerialist," or supporter of the
Roid-Wautito party ; " F." represents a
" Federalist." who supported federation on
the lines laid down by Mr. Barton ; whilst
" I." indicates an Independent candidate.
Tho lottor 'S." denotes that tho candi-
date had been selected either by the Min-
isterial party, or the federation party
under Mr. Barton. Thus-" M.S." means
Ministerialist-Selected candidate," and
'. F.S." stands for "Fedoralisfe selected by
tho National Federal Party." The as-
terisk denotes the former member.
THE KING DIVISION.
At the declaration of the poll of the
King Division, Mr. Roid said ho had to
return his heartfelt thanks to the 7,509
electors whose votes had placed him in tho
proudest position of Australia. (Great and
continued cheering.) Ho always rolicd
upon his old frionds of the King Division,
who had so loyally stood by him in the
past, not deserting him at this great
national crisis. (Load chooring.) He felt
that ho had dono nothing to desorvo that
they should desert him. He felc that ho
had fought the battle honourably and
honestly, and he was glad to say that ho
had beon opposed on this occasion by an
honourable opponent. (Great cheoring.)
Ho could carry no sort of bitterness in his
mind towards his great antagonist-(loud
cheering)-for coming to this division and
bringing his great and commanding abilities
and weighty support to bear against him.
Ho had conFerred tho greatest electoral dis-
tinction on his (Mr. Reid's) life. (Cheers.)
Ho hoped that a key noto had been struck
thero that would resound throughout Now
South Wales. (Cheers.) Ho was nob at
present in a mood to say an unkind word
about any of his strongest opponents.
(Hear, hoar.)
Mr. Barton, who was received with groat
cheering and some groans, said ho was
pleased to leam that the victor and the
vanquished in this contest wcro able to
shako hands like men. (Loud choers.)
He had no resentment again'st any
elector in tho division who voted .against
him. (Cheers.) His wholo desire was
to serve the country, and if there
wero electors who did nob think
he should have beon elected to
serve them on that occasion ho did
not feel tho slightest gall or bitter-
ness about it. (Cheers.) They would find
hhn learning to labour and to wait in tho
cause of Federation. Ho would still bo
loyal to the cause of that great
Australia which they wanted to
make a powerful nation. (Loud cheers.)
Mr. Reid and ho had many fights, but it
was a gi-eat tiling to remember that they
could still shake hands as frionds. As far
as he was concornod, whatever opposition
in futuro he might havo to meothe hoped to
bear his part manfully and fairly. (Loud
cheers.)
FEELING IN VICTORIA.
MELBOURNE, July 27.
Progress results of the New South Walos
elections were posted outside newspaper
offices to-night. Fairly largs crowds as-
sembled to watch the returns, but there
was an entire absence of anything like
keenness of interest or enthusiasm. The
return of Mr. Reid appoared to bo taken as
a foregone conclusion.
