MINERS AND COST OF LIVING
Melbourno, Nov. 26.
Proceedings in connection with
the claims by the gold mining sec
tion of the Austi'alian Worker'
Union for .improved wages and con
ditions yesterday took the form of
an investigation into the cost of
living by a sub-committee repre
sentative of employers and em
ployees. , The problem was exhaus
tively gone into, and the sub
committee was assisted by an officer
from the Federal Statistician's De
partment. A comprehensive report
was drawn up, and it was stated
yesterday that, although the dele
gates at the conference so far repre
sent only Victoria and Tasmania,
West Australia would also be
affected by the present negotiations.
There are about 5000 miners
affected in Victoria and Tasmania,
and 4000 in West Australia.. The
conference was continued to-day
but was not concluded. A special
sub-committee will meet to-morrow
morning to considerYthe question of
conditions, and will report to the
full conference to-morrow afternoon.
It was stated to-day that the out
look for a settlement was hopeful.
Mr. Mark Rosenberg, a former
Mayor of Kalgoorlie, died at
Broome last night from complica
tions supervening on influenza (said
a Perth telegram received last
night).
In the Legislative Council to-day
leave' of absence for six consecutive
sittings was granted to Mr. J. E.
Dodd on the ground of ill-health
(said a Perth telegram received last
Might).
