INFLUENZA AT BROOME. {
-.-v-.
A SERIOUS- OUTBREAK.
Broome, Nov- 26.
A distressing phase of the influenza out-
break was discovered through tb« investi-
gations into the cause of death of four
'Binghis." Scores of them are lying ill
adjacent to the living quarters of others j
in the town. Representations to the police
elicited that there is no room in the hos- i
pital for "Binghis," and no medicine et !
the Government Hospital for anybody.
The matron is ill, and the nursing staff is
depleted. The latter are being kindly as-
sisted by the local nuns- Dr. Haynes ls
away, end the chairman of the Board of
Health is in hospital, and, although the
Central Board has supplied tenta for emer-
gencies not the slightest effort is being
made by the local authorities to cope wath
the epidemic. The crews off the boats,
when becoming ill, ara allowed to go to
the overcrowded boarding-houses, lt is
suggested that a vigilance committee be
elected to control mattera. One white
man (Mr. Mark Rosenberg), three "Bing-
his," and one South Sea islander have suc-
cumbed to pneumonia following upon in-
fluenza. There have been no fresh cases
among the Japanese and Chinese during
the past six days. The most serious cases
on hand are those of white men, but it ia
not anticipated that any of these cases
will prove fatal..
