Sir John Newlands
Given State Funeral
Hundreds of people lined the route
yesterday from Canning street, St.
Leonards, Glenelg, to the North Brigh-
ton Cemetery, at the State funeral
given to Senator Sir John Newlands.
Messages of sympathy were received
from the Governor-General (Sir Isaac
Isaacs) and Lady Isaacs, and from
the Prime Minister (Mr. Lyons).
Captain T. Barr Smith, A.D.C., re
presented the Governor (Sir Alexander
Hore-Ruthven), and other official re
presentatives were:—The Common
wealth Government, Mr. Price. M.H.R.;
Senate, Senator Daly; State Govern
ment, the Premier (Mr. Hill), the
Speaker (Mr. Shepherd), the Commis
sioner of Public Works (Mr. Mcln
nes), the Minister of Local Govern
ment (Mr. Jelley), the Commissioner
of Police (Brigadier-General Leane),
the leader of the Opposition (Mr. But
ler), Brigadier Hardie (Base Comman
dant). Lieutenant Jarrett (Naval De
partment), Mr. W. E. Rogers (Auditor-
General). Mr. E. P. Ramsay (senior
Federal public officer).
The chief mourners were Lady New
lands. Messrs. William A. Newlands
(Sydney), Alan J. and Don J. New
lands. Mrs. H. P. Stephens (daughter),
Mesdames A. J. and D. J. Newlands
(daughters-in-law), Messrs. H. P.
Stephens (son-in-law), and Stewart
Newlands (nephew).
At the graveside the Rev. A. C.
Stevens (Congregational) and Pastor
Theo. Edwards (Church of Christ)
conducted the service.
Among those at the grave were
Senators O'Halloran, Hoare, and Dun
can-Hughes. Mr. Stacey, M.H.R.,
Messrs. Tassie, Cooke, and Harvey,
M.L.C.'s, Mr. Anthoney, M.P., Profes
sor Perkins (Director of Agriculture),
Messrs. John Verran, Crawford
Vaughan, the Mayor of Glenelg (Mr
W. Fisk). Aldermen H. S. Ragless and
J. W. Sutherland, and Councillor
Hayles.
