'DEATH OF AN OLD i
COLONIST |
TH-£ LATE IWR8. MARY SAMSON.
A very old colonist of this State, ' in
the person of airs. Mary Samson, re
lict of the late Michael Samson, passed
away on the 18th Instant, at her late
residence, 'Parkview,' Ellen-street,
OTremantle, In her 70th year. In 1SG8
Mrs. Samson arrived In thto State,' and
went to Maokie's Crossing, noar York,
where sho lived with the 'Meal's' fam
ily. In 1889 she married the lato
Michael garrison at Fremanlle, . Tho
deceased lady was Mayoress of Fre
mantle from 1005 to 1007, during which
period sho was an ardent worker r-I
all charitable societies and committees.
She took a keen interest in Lho Waifs'
Homo, Parkorville, 'which work ahe
continued until forced to relinquish,
owing to ill-health, in lOK, While
Mayoress she distinguished herself by
driving the first Fremantle tram. Sho
waa an earnest -wur 'worker, and al
though .practically confined to her 'bed
during the years of hostilities, silo
knitted 800 (pairs of sox. and mittens,
and 180 Ibalaclava caps and mufflers,
uwing raw material lo the value oJ!
£140 sterling, During tho last few
months her condition appeared to be
Improving1, therefore her sudden de
mise waa quite unexpected by her
numerous friends. A grown-up family
of one son and two daughters survive
her. The funeral cortege moved
from her late residence on Friday af
ternoon, the 14th instant, and proceed*
od to the Fremantlo Cemetery, where
the remalnB were interred. The Rev,
Robert Hanlin officiated, at the grave
side in the 'presence of relatives,
friends, and old identities. The chief
mourners were: -—.Mr. W. T?. .Samson
(son), Messrs. W. H. J. Samson find
L. Oaks (nephews), and Mr. L. Jou
Ibert (oouBln). The pall-bearers were:
—Dr. Birmingham, and Messrs. W. B.
B. iSolomon, J. :B. Higham, A. Mitchell,
J. H, Payne, P. Awcock, B. J. Oava
nagh, and 33. 'H. Fothergill. Those
present were: Messrs. B. Rleuaset,' P.
H, Potherlck, C, Cowan, T. J, Carrick,
F. Sears, C. 'Nicholas, K. Poarse, Mona
ghan; W. Watson, sen., H. Price, W.
Tlckell, E. P. Dowley, I.S.O., W.
Higham, J. J. Higham, F. 3D. Gibson
(Mayor), Grade, J. 33. P. Dowley, jun.,
C. Bateman, L. Steffanoni, R-. M. King,
P. M'Carthy, L. Ratazzi, T. J. Os
tiorno, Lieut. Louden-Shand, and the
Rev. Watson, and others. Many
handsome wreatihs were placed on the
igrave, and numerous letters, tele
grams, and cards, etc, of sympathy
have ibeen received iby tho bereaved
family. The funeral arrangements
?were carried out by Messrs. Arthur H.
Davles and Co., of Fremantle and
'Claremont.
