M AURITIUS.
OQu Manritian papers bring intelligenc'e
to April 2 th, We extract the following
alarming report.
1l. MI. Steamer Medea from Bombay
6th March anchored at the mouth of our
harbour on Sunday evening last. It was
very soon known that the cholera existed
on board, an alarm and dismay spread
rapidly over the town. The Mayor re
paired to Redoitto his Excellency, pray
ing him to use every means to remove
the danger that threatened the colony;
mnueh excitement prevailed in town, and
business was little attended to ; groups
assembled anxious to know the decision
of the governuor His Excellency promised
to coruply with the wishes of the inhtiabi
tants. All the water that the steamer re
quired was sent off on Monday evening
and Tuesday morning, and government
lost no time iii sending medicines, It
then became known that the steamer in
sisted on coaling, which was expedited,
the coals purchased and a hulk brought
to deliver them, after which his Excel
lency in answer to a'deputation, of the
municip,il council, provtdel that she
should leave. After the lapse of four days
she was still riding at anchor, when the
Mayor again waited upon the Governor
to obtain the flttilntent of his promise ;
a letter from tihe colonial Secretary was
received explaining the reasons of the
steamer's detention, the hulk in taking
off coals to her had damaged her paddle
boxes, so that they were obliged to effect
her coaling by means of boats, and tp to
that time she had only fifty tons on
board. His Excellency assured theI, that
the quarantine was maintained with the
greatest strictness, the boats ofl the
Orestes keeping euard and watch through
the nitght. On tile morning of the 25th,
500 gallons of water were asked for and
sent on hoard, then canme an order for
ham and wine, beer and porter; the in
habitants were much vexed and alarmed
at this delay. The steamer had not left up
to our latest date; no fresh case of cholera
had broken out aboard.
A rumour was afloat that Sir John
Franklin had solved the great geographi
cal problem, a Lieutenant despatched
by him, having it is said arrived at San
Francisco on his way to England via
Panamia.
Another rumour is, that the Emperor
of Russia is dead.
China Mail, 21st February.-A rumour
has bhln spread that the Emperor of
China is dead, but we are disposed to
believe it originates in the intelligence
of the death of the Empress Dowager.
Le Maurcien, reports the arrival of
the Eurydice from I'rest, extracting it
from"La Feuille Hlebdomadaire" de Port
Louis, she brings Capt. Doret the now
Governor of the Isle de Reunion vi:e

ABnTRacr of the general state of the
poll at the close of the election for the
return of two Members, to serve in the
Legislative Council of New South Wales,
for the Electoral District of Port Phillip,
in the room of Messrs. Forster and Mac
kinnon resiened, as made up by the Re
turning Officer, from the Voting Papers
kept at the several Polling Places.
