Exercises

give aid

to staff

• Members of the typing pool at Central Office, Canberra, doing their daily

exercises to ease keyboard stress.

• Members of the word processing staff at Central Office, Canberra, say they

gain benefit from the exercises.

"It is working wonders"

Members of the Department's

Central Office typing pool and

word processing staff in

Canberra now engage in daily

physical exercises on the job to

avoid strain and to help them

relax.

And, according to Mrs Claire

Higgs, word processing

supervisor, it is working wonders

in easing tension and improving

morale.

"Staff members are enjoying

the brief respite from their duties

to engage in the 10-minute

exercises twice daily at the

workplace," she said. "We also

feel much better in mind and

body afterwards."

The exercises have been

recommended by the Australian

Capital Territory Health

Commission and the

Tenosynovitis Support Group.

They vary from shoulder

rolling, upper arm stretching,

wrist flexing, knee kissing, trunk

twisting, back relaxing and leg

stretching. Health experts say

that if the exercises are done

properly and regularly they can

reduce the risk of tenosynovitis

(repetition strain injury).

Central Office keyboard staff

are also allowed to take 10-

minute breaks every hour from

their duties to avoid strain injury.

• Assets task force mass project:

380,000 PENSIONERS TO

GET GUIDANCE ON TEST

About 380,000 service pensioners are being given gui-

dance by letter this month on the new assets test.

This project involved posting

about 232,000 letters to individ-

ual households to reach the

380,000 service pensioners.

Nearly 85 per cent of them will

not be required to reply to the

letter unless their assets on their

own assessment exceed the level

when the test would apply.

The Department will assume

that those pensioners who do not

send reply have assets below

this level and then allow their

pensions to remain unchanged.

The other 15 to 20 per cent of

the pensioners will receive an as-

sets test form which they will be

asked to complete and return to

the Department. Guidance notes

will be included to assist these

pensioners.

After the forms have been

processed by the Department's

assets test task force the pen-

sioners will be sent an advice let-

ter informing them whether their

pension has been affected.

video tape on the assets test

is being made by the Department

in conjunction with Film Aus-

tralia. Copies of the tape will be

available to service organisations

in each State to show to their

members.

Copies will also be available for

viewing and loan in Repatriation

hospitals and in State branches of

the Department.

Meanwhile personnel from all

State task forces have met in Mel-

bourne for week to undergo

intensive training in all aspects of

the assets test. They in turn will

train supervisors, delegates and

examiners in their own States.

Staff from each State have also

spent fortnight in Canberra to

test whether the new Automatic

Data Processing (ADP) pen-

sioners information system

operates as intended.

This involved comprehensive

testing of all programs and the use

of some 900 test cases covering

all types of assessment situations.

Owing to the size and complex-

ity of the conversion of ADP sys-

tems to accept assets data, con-

version will take place in Novem-

ber over period of about three

weeks.

The assets test does not apply

to those receiving War Widow

or disability pensions when it

comes into effect on 14 March

next year.

Operation reach-out'

The Department's Tasmanian

Branch recently conducted

series of successful Statewide

",reach-out" seminars to explain

the new assets test to service

pensioners.

Three senior officers talked to

more than 1,100 pensioners in

suburban and urban areas to

allay their fears on the test.

Most expressed satisfaction

with the answers given to their

queries.

Branch Officer, Sean Weir (left),

discussing the assets test with ser-

vice pensioners at Glenorchy.
