Double century for WA veterans  

TWO West Australian vete-  

rans celebrated their 100th  

birthdays together on August  

20.  

Mr William Barrett, of Bun-  

bury, and Mr Gordon White,  

of Wembley, had joint 100th  

birthday party at the Forrest  

Lodge annex of Bunbury  

Regional Hospital, organised  

by the hospital and Perth RSL  

sub-branches.  

Mr Barrett’s birthday was on  

August 20 and Mr White’s  

birthday fell three days later.  

Both veterans served with the  

10th Light Horse Brigade  

during World War and met  

in the Middle East. They have  

kept in touch over the years.  

Mr Barrett is the oldest World  

War veteran in Western  

Australia and worked as  

dairyfarmer after the war. He  

retired to Perth 20 years ago.  

Mr White also attended his  

own party, which was given by  

Perth RSL on his birthday.

Australia year  

THE Battle of Australia commemoration  

the year-long memorial to those who served  

in the Northern Territory during World War  

II will open next month and close in  

November next year.  

It will commemorate Australia’s war at  

home our frontline, the scene of the first  

and only sustained conflict on Australian  

soil and it will provide lasting memorial  

to the 250,000 Australians, Americans,  

British, Dutch, Indonesians and Canadians  

who served in the Territory theatre.  

The year encompasses the 50th anniversar-  

ies of:  

• Pearl Harbour;  

• the first devastating air strike on Aus-  

tralian soil, on Darwin;  

• the Battle of the Sunda Strait;  

• the Battle of the Coral Sea;  

• the Battle of Midway;  

• the Kokoda and Milne Bay campaigns in  

New Guinea; and  

• the fall of Singapore.  

1942, critical year in Australian history,  

began with the fear of invasion, the collapse  

of Singapore, invasion of New Guinea and  

the assault on Darwin. It ended with the  

tide of war turned.  

The Northern Territory’s unique year-long  

memorial in 1992 involves all major Terri-  

tory centres from Alice Springs to Darwin.  

There will be commemorative events each  

month and special memorial observances  

on February 19, April 25 and November 11.  

Tours will go to wartime sites airstrips,  

defensive positions, camps and munitions
