Extracts from the Barton Collection, comprising a copy of the will of Rev. Robert Knopwood of Van Diemen's Land 1834, and notes on the Hoyle and Wall Families of Gloucestershire and New Zealand, written in 1965.

Rolfe Family papers. Letters 1877-88 of Charles W.N. Rolfe of Alpha Station, near Beaufort, Queensland, to his family in Norfolk.

Rolfe (Heacham) manuscripts. Three printed items about emigration to Australia, especially by females, 1834-35.

Petre Papers 1812-73 concerning land and dwellings at Swanton Abbott, Norfolk, formerly owned by Thomas Freeman. His granddaughter Eliza Graver (nee Eglington) was living in Adelaide in 1862. Papers include certificates of baptism and marriage at Reepham, Norfolk of Freeman's descendants, and letters and documents 1849-74 relating to money paid to Charles Edward Wodehouse of Rockhampton, Queensland.

Freeman correspondence. Letters 1875-1907 to William P.B. Freeman, Norwich artist and photographer, and his family from relatives in Victoria. Correspondents include Ellen Bryant of Castlemaine, Alfred Freeman of Carlton, David G. Freeman of South Yarra, and Ellen de Carle Freeman.

George Colman Green. The thirty-sixth voyage of the Afric (White Star liner) to Australia, 21 December 1912 - 9 February 1913 (File MS174)

Bound typescript volume with watercolours and added manuscript notes.

The typescript comprises the diary (53pp.) of his voyage on the Afric from Liverpool to Melbourne, 26 December 1912 - 9 February 1913, with some later manuscript annotations, and a few sketches and newspaper cuttings. The entries refer to the weather, the seas, sightings of other ships, fellow-passengers, sightings of whales and albatrosses, reading, concerts, theatrical productions, a lecture by one of the passengers, the journalist Henry Stead, visits to Cape Town and an ascent of Table Mountain, the formation of a labour exchange and information bureau on the ship, huge seas and a hurricane in the Indian Ocean, landings at Albany and Adelaide, and the arrival at Melbourne (2 February 1913), and Green's search for employment. There are sketches of the lighthouse at Breaksea Island, Albany, a black swan, Port Phillip Bay and the centre of Melbourne.

George Colman Green (1877-1970) was a poet and artist who spent some time in Australia before World War I.

Sir (William) Henry Lytton Earle Bulwer (1801-1872), 1st Baron Dalling and Bulwer (created 1871), joined the Diplomatic Service in 1827 and in the following years served in Berlin, Vienna and The Hague. He was also a member of the House of Commons from 1830 to 1837. He was the British Ambassador in Spain (1843-1848), the United States (1849-1852) and Turkey (1858-1865).

The correspondence relates to Bulwer's appointment as parliamentary agent of the Australian colonies, his relation with the Australian Patriotic Association, a petition by the inhabitants of Van Diemen's Land against George Arthur, the lieutenant-governor, educational establishments in New South Wales (1837), trial by civil jury in New South Wales, an examintaion of Sir John Jamison before the Police Committee on the administration of justice in the colony, and the use of convict labour.

The correspondents include Sir George Grey (Colonial Office), Alexander McLeay (Sydney), Potter Macqueen (Sydney), H. Carmichael (Sydney), Gilbert Robertson (Hobart), S. Donaldson (London), Charles Buller (Bodmin) and William Bryan (London).

The Press Family were merchant mariners. Joseph Crisp Press (1820-1896) was a captain of merchant vessels and later a ship owner. His son Joseph Buckingham Press (1848-1927) sailed on several of his father's voyages and was later captain of the Frederica.

Death of James Henry Prowse, February 1873 - June 1876 (File BR 66/114)

Correspondence, invoices and accounts concerning the death of a seaman, James Henry Prowse, who was drowned at Sandridge, Victoria, on 2 February 1873 and was buried in Melbourne with Roman Catholic rites. The papers include correspondence with Catherine Collins and John Foley in Ireland (26 July; 11 Oct 1873); invoices and wages due to Prowse; invoice for funeral John Dally, undertaker, Melbourne (Feb 1873).

Biographical / Historical

The Pillow Family managed the Princess Restaurant in Castle Street, Norwich. Margaret Scott (d. 1929), who married Edward Pillow in 1891, awas the chair of the Association of Teachers of Domestic Science and an examiner in cookery and domestic science. She had two sons - Edward, and Henry who died on active service 8 Aug 1917. On the death of her husband in 1910, she took over the running of the Princess Restaurant, and upon her death in 1929, her son Edward took over the Restaurant.

Biographical / Historical

Prince Frederick Duleep Singh (1868-1926) was the son of the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire. He lived for twenty years at Blo Norton Hall near Thetford. He served in the Norfolk Yeomanry and had a strong interest in archaeology and antiquities of Norfolk. He wrote the book Portraits in Norfolk Houses (1928), edited by Edmund Farrer.
