Administrative History

The first Sir James Hill was born at Harden, the son of Mr William Hill, a wool merchant. In 1875 he entered into a business partnership with a Mr John Reddihough. In 1891 he established his own business, initially importing wool and then adding woolcombing and topmaking to the business. Sir James Hill was one of the leading textile magnates of the period. In addition to his business interests in textiles he was the first chairman of the Bradford and District Newspaper Co Ltd in 1898 and in 1909 became one of two partners who owned The Yorkshire Observer. Sir James Hill also held public office, being a Mayor of Bradford in 1908 and representing Bradford Central as its MP for 3 years from 1916. He received a Baronetcy in 1916 and was made a Freeman of the City of Bradford in 1921.

His two sons Albert Hill and Arthur James Hill were taken into partnership. In 1922 the firm was incorporated into a Limited Company under the title Sir James Hill and Sons Ltd. The eldest son, Arthur James Hill died in 1935, and Sir James himself a year later in 1936. He was succeeded in turn by his son Sir Albert Hill, the second Sir James Hill and Sir James Frederick Hill.

The firm had strong links with Australia and New Zealand. Two firms, Sir James Hill and Sons (Australia) Ltd and Sir James Hill (New Zealand) Ltd were created in 1949 to act as buying agents in Australia and New Zealand. These activities had formerly been carried out by Mr N.Hill in Melbourne and Messrs H. and R.H.Hill in New Zealand. The Australian Company was amalgamated with Booth Hill and Sons, Pty Ltd in 1968.
