Biographical / Historical
The Roman Catholic dioceses in England ceased to exist during the Reformation of the sixteenth century. From 1688 to 1840 England was divided into four districts - London, Midlands, Northern and Western - each administered by a vicar-apostolic (a prelate in episcopal orders, but without the full authority of a diocesan bishop). In 1840 four additional districts were created. In 1850 took place the restoration of the hierarchy, with England divided into the Archbishopric of Westminster and twelve suffragan sees.
