DIGGERS' DIGEST

Vol No. 15

FRIDAY, 9th APRIL, 1948.

GREENSLOPES REPAT. HOSPITAL.

SOUTHPORT SUNBAKE

By HOMER

There was the usual mad

rush for the bus on Sunday

morning at the Red Cross

Centre as we prepared for our

trip to Southport. Hilarity was

the note throughout most of

the trip, except for few cut-

ting remarks about the care-

lessness of some of the drivers

on the road. Evidence of this

was borne out by the sight of

sedan car overturned few

miles this side of our destina-

tion.

On our arrival at Southport

few decided to surf, com-

pletely ignoring the scum which

lay on tfie top of the water.

Most of us, however, decided to

either wander around the beach

or stay in the bus, and of those

who stayed in the bus. noticed

one chap receive horrible

hiding at euchre, hardly mak-

ing show. stranger, call-

ing himself “Timbuctoo,” very

generously donated pound

towards soft drinks and ice-

creams, gesture we very much

appreciated.

Lunch was the next item, and

there seemed to be no short-

age of willing helpers either in

preparing it or in eating it.

After everything was cleared

away general air of somno-

lence overtook us, and supine

figures were to be seen every-

where, only stirring to follow

the shade as it shifted. With

marvellous burst of energy

several of the fellows started

cricket game of sorts, but there

was an appeal against the tide

which finished that.

Afternoon smoke-oh being

finished we started the trip

home, and much interest was

shown in the speed-boat races

on the Sound. Crabs were

bought for those left behind at

home to show that we had not

forgotten them, and after

joyous day spent amid beau-

tiful sunshine we arrived home

at about 5.30.

These Sunday outings by

courtesy of Red Cross mean

lot to those among us, whose

homes are not in Brisbane, and

who could not otherwise get

out of week-end, and it is to

be hoped that they will con-

tinue indefinitely. Thank you

very much. Red Cross, we “out-

of-towners” really appreciated

it.

Appreciation

Our thanks to Mr. Ingham

for giving up portion of his

Easter vacation to entertain

our boys in ward 16. Truly

noble gesture on the part of

his good lacly and himself.

The pupils of Greenslopes

State School were “on the job”

once more under the leadership

of their teacher, Mr. Nixon.

These young Aussies always do

remarkable job for the pati-

ents here, and it is certainly

appreciated. Right from the

inception of this hospital they

have made regular visits to us

with their fife band and al-

ways have gifts of flowers, etc.,

for the wards. Their latest

gift was. £l/1/ to our own

“Nurse Repatriation” of the

“Queen of the Nurses” compe-

tition. Thanks, boys and girls,

for another fine effort.

EASTER WEDDING

On Easter Monday, at Green-

slopes, Padre Reilly officiated

at the wedding of two mem-

bers of the hospital staff, when

Aubrey Theodore, Bth son of

the late Mr. and Mrs. W. J.

Black, formerly of Monto, took

unto himself wife, Joan

Wyatt, of Moorooka.

The bride made very

charming picture in frock of

white lace, and wore full

length embroidered tulle veil.

She was attended by one

bridesmaid, Miss Dulcie Haw-

kins, while the best man’s part

was filled by Mr. J. Jurd. With

the good wishes of everyone in

the ’Slopes ringing in their ears

the happV couple left to spend

their honeymoon on the

Northern Rivers. am sure

that all will join in wishing

them long and happy life to-

gether.

SISTER’S NOTES:

Seen at Ascot over Easter:

Srs. Cronin, Lanski, Baker,

Boatfield, Symes. Bolger, Bo-

land, Campbell.

Exchanging wedding vows

this month, Srs. Hobbs and

Halcrow. May they toe as

happy as the “Digest” wishes

them.

Elected president of the Cen-

taur Memorial Repatriation

Committee, is Sister Hoey. She

will need 100 per cent, co'-

operation if our queen is to be

the successful one.

Greenslopes’ Sister H. Ensor

has been nominated as “Nurse

G. H. Stewart,” of Stone’s Cor-

ner, in the “Queen of the

Nurses” competition in aid of

Centaur Memorial Fund. Good

luck, Sister Ensor, we all wish

you success.

TITBITS

Miss Eileen Davies, the popu-

lar O.T. girl who has been with

us since the hospital started,

has let us know that she won’t

be returning from Tassie. The

reason? Well, Miss Davies will

soon be Mrs. Congrats.,

Eileen. We’ll piiss you.

More congratulations, this

time to our “Skipper” Eisen-

trager (Ward 15) who succeeded

in getting his “Mud” Ticket,

Limited Coasting Masters’

Ticket, to you, if you aren’t

seafaring man!

J. A. Robertson, the grand

old man of Ward 15, didn’t tell

the Editor his age. Our guess

is that Queen Victoria was in

her prime when Baby Robert-

son arrived. Good on you,

Robbie!

We were intrigued by the

spectacle of doctor approach-

ing the morgue swinging his

stethescope. Optimistic or ab-

sent-minded?

Glad to see “Pick” from O.T,

up again after fortnight in

bed in Ward 18. Hope she’ll be

on the job again soon.
