unique Australian development, the garden of remembrance, was of  

keen interest to H.R.H. the Princess Anne during her recent visit to  

Western Australia.  

The Princess visited the Perth War  

Cemetery and the Western Aus-  

tralian Garden of Remembrance

The Princess, as Colonel-in-Chief  

of the Royal Corps of Signals, was  

keen to view commemorations to  

ex-members of the Royal Austral-  

ian Corps of Signals.  

She was interested also in the  

graves of World War veterans  

who died of influenza at the Perth  

Quarantine Station in 1918-19 en  

route home from Europe. She also  

inspected the graves of four Viet-  

nam veterans and the grave of Mr  

Bluey Truscott, V.C.  

COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES  

CHIEF VISITS AUSTRALIA  

The Vice-Chairman of the Com-  

monwealth War Graves Commis-  

sion, Admiral Sir David Williams,  

G.C.B., D.L., visited Australian War  

Graves in several capital cities from  

20-25 February 1987.  

The Vice-Chairman, accompanied  

by the Director of the Office of  

Australian War Graves, Mr A.T.S.  

Clarke, visited war cemeteries in  

Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.  

During his visit to Canberra, Sir  

David laid wreath at the Austral-  

ian War Memorial prior to guided  

tour.  

While in Canberra, Sir David also  

met with the Governor-General,  

Sir Ninian Stephen; the Minister  

for Veterans' Affairs, Senator  

Arthur Gietzelt; the Secretary of  

the Department of Veterans'  

Affairs, Mr Noel Tanzer; the Chief  

of the General Staff, General Peter  

Gration; National President of the  

RSL, Sir William Keys and the Brit-  

ish High Commissioner, Sir John  

Leahy.

Ministerial Appointment Announced  

DISABLED VETERAN ELECTED TO WESTERN  

AUSTRALIAN CABINET  

veteran who lost both legs in the Vietnam conflict has  

been elected to the Western Australian Cabinet.  

Mr Graham Edwards, 40, the North  

Metropolitan Member of the  

Western Australian Legislative  

Council, has become Cabinet  

Secretary and Minister for Sport  

and Recreation.  

Mr Edwards said he saw his elec-  

tion as significant victory for the  

disabled.  

“I believe the majority of the peo-  

ple in the disabled community  

nave tremendous amount to  

offer, and it is unfortunate that  

they aren’t given lot of oppor-  

tunity to do that,” he said.  

“If nothing else, I’d hope that my  

having this position might change  

the thinking of some people. That  

includes some disabled people,  

who can get little dejected and  

negative and think they are limited  

in what they can do.  

“You are only bound by what you  

see your own horizons to be.

Premier, Mr Brian Burke’s faction,  

Hon. Graham Edwards MLC Minister for  

Sport and Recreation and Parliamentary  

Secretary of the Cabinet.

senior Minister, Mr Des Dan.  

SECRETARY VISITS STATES  

Repatriation Commission President and Secretary of the Department of  

Veterans’’ Affairs, Mr Noel Tanzer, began familiarisation visit to all  

states this month.  

During the visits, Mr Tanzer will  

meet with staff in Branch Offices,  

Defence Service Homes, Repatria-  

tion hospitals, Repatriation Artifi-  

cial Limb and Applicance Centres,  

the Vietnam Veterans Counselling  

Service and representatives of ex-  

service organisations.  

The dates for the visits are pro-  

posed as follows:  

12-13 March Brisbane  

8-10 April Melbourne  

30 April-1 May Adelaide  

18 May Hobart  

3-5 June Sydney  

18-19 June Perth  

Wherever possible visits have been  

arranged to coincide with ex-  

service conferences.  

Mr Tanzer said that he was particu-  

larly keen to reinforce the point  

that the Repatriation Commission  

is national organisation suppor-  

ted by the whole of the Depart-  

ment of Veterans’ Affairs.  

“A unified corporate image and  

healthy corporate spirit are very  

important,” he said.  

“All the organisations will be vis-  

iting are pa&t of large, complex

portfolio and will be encourag-  

ing better communication between  

them. believe that the organisa-  

tions which come under the De-  

partment of Veterans' Affairs  

particularly the hospitals should  

present themselves to our clients  

and the public as part of highly-  

respected, national organisation.  

“More than 13,000 people work  

for the Department of Veterans’  

Affairs and have already received  

glowing tributes about their car-  

ing and dedication from the ex-service  

community.”
