No. 6. SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE. JANUARY 15TH, 1917. PRICE

FORGET.

(From the Somme trenches).

When am dead, and left this mortal strife

Lay me not 'neath the trees, whose hidden life

In time will creep, and feed upon my bones,

And leaves will spring, and shoot beyond the zones

Of mother earth, to leave their perfume there

If one passed by, she with the sunkissed hair,

And zephyrs chanced to waft their living scent,

The love of old would surge, and discontent

Would mar life that need no sorrow know,

Ah where to find place to lay me low.

The open fields aye, there my bones intern,

For in this spot no living soul will learn

Of my abode no cross, no flowers gay,

But sunshine, drying tears of dew, each day.

V. N. HOPKINS.

Life is not hand of poker,

In this game you use the joker;

Its the card to hold the longest,

Its the one you find the strongest.

Laugh and drive the Blues away;

Laugh, say IP

THE DINKUM TEN.

Ten gallant sappers, marching in line

Along came whizzbang and then there were nine;

Nine gallant sappers, digging the mud,

One struck something?must've been dud

Eight gallant sappers looking for sport

Came on some ammonal?another sapper short;

Seven gallant sappers, shovels and picks,

Caught in barbed wire, and so there were six

Six gallant sappers, too much alive,

Played with some "Mills bombs, and then there

were five

Five gallant sappers, tired and sore,

Picked up microbe and so there were four;

Four gallant sappers got up to see

Over the parapet, then there were three

Three gallant sappers, feeling so blue,

One drank the others' rum, then there were two

Two gallant sappers, met with Hun

Who turned out sniper and so there was one

One gallant sapper who sought souvenirs,

Found Bosch mine, and ?mafeesh Engineers.

A. N. SHUTTLEWORTH.
