THE RISING SUN

Journal of the .A.I.F. in France. (With which is incorporated The Honk.")

No. 13. Somewhere in France. February Bth, 1917. Price

THE ALL-POWERFUL.

Poets from time of yore have sung,

With every rhyme in every tongue

Of beauty and the power of love

Of earthly things, and things above.

Sonnets to ladies dedicated

(Often, fear, much overrated';

They raved on this, they raved on that

From dukes to the domestic cat.

On blessed peace and glorious war:

On feats of daring steeped with gore;

And every kind of wondrous deeds

Which history or tradition breeds.

But would humbly sing to praise

Something unhonored in these days

The cure for broken legs and arms,

For sufferers from rheumatic qualms,

From wounds by bullet or the knife

Obtained in peace or dcadlv strife

For broken heads or chilhlained toes

And twenty thousand other woes;

For that incurable disease

sup?rabundance of V.C.?s

For nervous breakdown, shrapnel it is,

Toothache, acute malingeritis;

For broken hearts, for busted clo?es

For every sickness science knows

All these and every other ill

Are cured by that all-searching PILL,

Choice gift to earth by powers divine—

sing in praise of NUMBER NINE

X.Y.Z.

KILLED IN ACTION.

Somebody weeps—some withered soul is aching,

Some lonely breast is filled with bitter care,

For lo 'tis spring, the rosebuds are awaking,

And singing birds are calling you, "Mon Cher."

Somebody cares and someone's thoughts go dream-

ing

Midst dear dead days and fields where wild

flowers grew,

Somebody cares, and eyes that once were beaming,

Aee dim for you, Mon Cher," are dim for you.

Somebody cares—white lips each hour are pray-

ing

Wet eyes look out across the misty blue,

Aye, someone cares and someone's soul is straying,

Seeking for you, Mon Cher, seeking for you.

Reginald Godfrey.
