Commonplace Book, 17th century (Item 42)
Clifford, Sir Thomas, 1st Baron Clifford, Lord Treasurer to Charles II): Commonplace Book. Original manuscript including index, printed label of Thomas Clifford dated 1647 on inside front cover. There is some arithmetical notation on flyleaf and the second flyleaf is torn, but there remains a note indicating that the manuscript was in the hand of Thomas Clifford himself. This suggestion has since been confirmed. Some of the pages have only a few lines while some pages are fully covered with annotation, notes and quotations. The binding has contemporary panels of sprinkled calf and spine gilt (spine covering loose). This manuscript is an unrecorded work that was not printed and belonged to the Lord Treasurer. 367 leaves.
