Australian Horticultural Magazine

AND

GARDEN GUIDE.

No. 3.

MELBOURNE, MARCH, 1878.

VOL. 11.

THE FUCHSIA.

No plant is perhaps more general favourite than the Fuchsia

and it is to be found nearly every garden. Its graceful droop-’

mg flowers produced in the greatest profusion are an attraction to

most people, and no collection of plants can be considered com-

plete without it. It belongs to the natural order Onagraceaj, and

embraces number of species, mostly natives of South America

but one (F excorticata), very strong growing kind, is indigenous

to New Zealand. The name was given in honour of Leonard

uchs, celebrated German botanist, who lived in the sixteenth

century. The finest known species was F. coccinea, hardy kind

with small scarlet flowers, introduced from Chili in 1788. In 1796

lyciodes, another species indigenous to Chili, was brought to

Europe, and these were the only kinds known till 1823, in which

year F. macrostemon and F. gracilis were added to the list. In

the following year several important additions were made to the

list, and since then many other interesting species have been dis-

covered and introduced.

There is, perhaps, no other plant that has been more improved

by the art of the horticulturist than the Fuchsia, and the florists’

varieties of the present day afford striking contrast to the

species from which they have originated. The number of varieties

that have been raised from seed are innumerable, and include

among them flowers which it is impossible to surpass according to

their respective type. Those who remember the old varieties that

were once grown and highly prized, and will mentally compare

them with the flowers of the present day, must acknowledge the

immense difference between the flowers of the past and the present.

There are varieties enough to suit all tastes, dark and light, single

and double, large flowers and strong habits. It is difficult now

for florists to produce flowers superior to existing ones, and the
