Australian Horticultural Magazine

GARDEN GUIDE.

No. 10.

MELBOURNE, OCTOBER', 1878.

Vol. 11.

THE PINK.

This is well-known and popular flower, Avhose delicate beauty

and delicious fragrance is appreciated by most people. It is

closely allied to the Carnation and Picotee, and is known in

botanical works as Dianthus hortensis. The generic name comes

from dios, divine, and anthos, flower, in allusion to its exquisite

fragrance, and signifies literally the flower of the gods. The

English name Pink, is said by some writers to be derived from

Dutch word meaning an eye. Others, however, assert that the

name comes from the German word Pinksten, Whitsuntide, on

account of the flowers being plentiful at that season. Botanically

the Pink belongs to the natural order Caryophyllacese (Silenaceay

of some authors).

Though classed as species, the origin of the Pink is obscure,,

and botanists are undecided as to the source from which it has

come. Some suppose Dianthus plurnarius to be the original

type, others, I). deltioides, D. armeria, D. carthusianorum, and

D. caryophyllus (the Carnation). Some writers assert that the

class known as Pheasant Eye Pinks have been obtained from D.

plurnarius, while the larger kinds have originated from D.

caryophyllus.

The Pink has been very popular flower in Great Britain since

the time of Elizabeth, at which period it appears to have been

well known. At that time and for long period after, it was

commonly known as the Wild Gilliflower, the prefix being used

to distinguish it from the Carnation, then called the Clove Gilli-

flower. It was held in great esteem by our British forefathers,

and the flowers were regarded as an emblem of pure affection and

purity of sentiment. In many other parts of Europe this plant

has also been for long period highly prized, and it is recorded

that the great Cond6, while prisoner in the Bastile, amused
