OUR FIRST YEAR.

The present number of this publication

completes the first year of its existence.

Those who watched over its birth,

and who cherished its earliest efforts, have

now the satisfaction to recognise with

feelings of considerable pleasure the first

anniversary of its natal day.

The Committee are not without hope

that this periodical may have been an instru-

mentof much usefulness: ithas,atleast,been

an agent for the issemination of information,

which has had the effect of recommending

to the colonists of Tasmania and Australia

the great moral movement of the age; and

the number of subscribers’ names with

which it has been honored may be referred

to as good proof that it enjoys the popular

favor.

To members of societies in Van Diemen’s

Land, New South Wales, Port Phillip, and

South Australia thecommitteehave to tender

their thanks. The successful establishment

of the work is the result of their united effort.

Its future success depends on the source

which has cradled its early days on

the united exertions of the friends of the

temperance cause in the southern colonies,

its continuance in being, and its future pros-

perity, entirely rests.

Tlic present condition of the Temperance

Cause in this part of the world is highly

gratifying. We know but of one branch

where any interruption of the genera! har-

mony has occurred; and, even in that in-

stance, we are not aware that differences of

opinion have been permitted to operate

unfavourably to the interests of the Herald;

the general interests of the total abstinence

cause must however suffer by such interrup-

tions, and we shall be glad to hear of *the

healing of all differences or, at any rate,

that there is an agreement to differ in “ non-

essentials,” while on points which may be

deemed “essential” to the general prosperity

of the movement, there shall henceforward

be perfect unanimity of sentiment and of

action.

The low price at which the Heraldk issued,

requires large circulation to render it remu-

nerative to the publisher. It is hoped that

all friends of the cause will feel it their

duty to aid in extending its circulation and

recommending its perusal.

Officers of societies, and other corres-

pondents who have aided the work by their

literary contributions, will accept the ac-

knowledgement and thanksof the committee

and will allow them to urge continuance

of their favours.
