Fix this textA TESTIMONY IN FAVOUR OF TEMPERANCE AND THE COLD
Fix this textWATER CURE. — BY JOHN GREAVES, ESQ.*
Fix this textWishing to caution young men against the
Fix this texthabits of intemperance, and to afford conso-
Fix this textlation and encouragement to others who may
Fix this textsuffer, as I have done, from dyspepsia, disease
Fix this textof the heart, and dropsy, with their conco-
Fix this textmitants, prostration of bodily strength and
Fix this textmental distress, I publish the following nar-
Fix this textrative of my case.
Fix this textI am in the seventy-second year of my
Fix this textage. When at school, I drank, as other
Fix this textboys did, small beer at dinner and supper.
Fix this textWhen I returned home, I was allowed a
Fix this textlittle ale, and sometimes, by way of a treat,
Fix this texta glass of wine; and I dare say I never
Fix this textrefused my glass. At the age of twenty-
Fix this textone, or thereabouts, 1 took ale, spirit and
Fix this textwater, or wine, as I pleased. Business led
Fix this textme into inns, and inclination into company,
Fix this textso that I had early training, and the other
Fix this textcommon temptations to drink deep. Yet I
Fix this textnever did so. I invariably abstained from
Fix this textdrinking before dinner—l scarcely ever
Fix this texttasted neat spirit, and was never intoxicated
Fix this textbut twice. The last time was at an early
Fix this textage, in a party at Dublin, when I com-
Fix this textpletely lost my senses. Upon finding them
Fix this textagain the next morning, I was so mortified
Fix this textat my folly, and so unwell, that I resolved
Fix this textnever to do the like again. For many years
Fix this textI usually took four or five glasses of wine at
Fix this textdinner, and frequently a pint, which I seldom
Fix this textexceeded. I took in addition a glass or two
Fix this textof ale or porter, and sometimes a glass of
Fix this textbrandy and water at night.
Fix this textSuch, I confess, has been my practice as
Fix this textto drinking; and now let me state what was
Fix this textthe result. I find that, for the sake of a
Fix this textdaily stimulus, always followed and coun-
Fix this textterbalanced by depression, I have purchased,
Fix this textat the cost of £3,000, days and weeks of
Fix this textmisery.
Fix this textUpon calculation, I cannot have spent less
Fix this textthan Is. 6d. per day in drink—say ten shil-
Fix this textlings per week—this, improved at 4 per
Fix this textcent., compound interest, for forty-four
Fix this textyears, amounts to £3,000, which sum, I
Fix this texthave reason to believe, I might have made
Fix this textof it.
Fix this textMoreover the money paid for medical
Fix this textadvice, and for medicine, which was to a
Fix this textlarge amount, should be added to the direct
Fix this textpecuniary loss. But all these combined,
Fix this textserious as they are, are trifling compefied with
Fix this textthe losses I have sustained in a physical and
Fix this textmoral sense; for who can calculate'the worth
Fix this textof health and happiness P They are beyond
Fix this textall price ! I had seldom been well long
Fix this texttogether; having been subject to dyspepsia,
Fix this textand fits of palpitation of the heart, which,
Fix this textas I increased in years became more frequent,
Fix this text* Mr. Greaves, who resides at Radford House, near Leamington, published this paper as a pamphlet for gratuitous circula-
Fix this texttion. We are enabled to transfer it to our pages by his friend, Joseph Archer, Esq., Panshanger, in this c >lony.—Ed T.Il.
