FISHER'S

COLONIAL MAGAZINE.

SKETCH OF THE NORTH-WESTERN BOUNDARY

DISTRICT,

PHYSICALLY, GEOGRAPHICALLY, POLITICALLY, COMMERCIALLY CONSIDERED.

BY LATE RESIDENT THERE.

[communicated.]

Having been the first who (in series of lelters published in the Times

papers at the close of the last year) awakened public attention to the

unsettled question of dispute between G’eat Britain and America,

then so little heeded and understood, but yet so influential on the

interests of this country —if the possession of her own rightful soil, the

interests of her trade, her national independence, and the maintenance

of pacific relations with powerful and closely-allied state like America,

be matter of interest—and having, from long residence in the country,

and watchful examination of all the bearings of the whole case to be

debated, been enabled to arrive at an unbiassed and correct conclusion,

imagine, now that the subject has engrossed so much public notice,

that it would not be unacceptable or inexpedient if were to give my

views more in detail.

At the commencement, may venture to offer remark on Lord

Ashburton’s mission, and its termination. Whether it constituted an

item in his lordship’s instructions, to bring to satisfactory and perma-

nent conclusion the undetermined point of the north-west boundary,

do not know, neither is it very material now to inquire suffice it to

say, that the grand vexata questio, which immediately pressed, and

which threatened to embroil both nations in war —and war which

would not have been confined in its operations and sphere of action
