Fix this textHitherto, it cannot be said that New Zealand has been under any
Fix this textgovernment at all, for the species of authority, possessed, first by the
Fix this textmissionaries and others, and subsequently by the British Resident,
Fix this textwas totally insufficient for the maintenance of order, or the protection
Fix this textof settlers from the lawless crew who resorted to the islands. The
Fix this textquestion, therefore, forcibly arises, of “ what are the principles upon
Fix this textwhich the government is in future to be carried on, and what measures
Fix this textare to be adopted for giving to the settlers that protection and encou-
Fix this textragement so justly claimed for them ?”
Fix this textWe propose, in offering the following observations, to make a brief,
Fix this textand, we trust, impartial review of the proceedings adopted from the
Fix this textcommencement of the attempt to colonize New Zealand.
