THE

COLONIAL MAGAZINE.

THE ST. LUCIA CASE.

The administration of the colonies is the most important

branch of our policy in some material respects, and it becomes

all wellwishers to their country and to the laws, to watch closely

the abuses committed in that department. The recent transac

tions in St. Lucia are such as pre-eminently to claim this atten

tive consideration, and we hasten to lay statement of them

before our readers. We take the side of no party to these pro

ceedings; we only record the facts which have been some time

before the public, and ought now to come before Parliament.

The violation of all constitutional law in the erection of

secret tribunal at home, even exceeds the violations by the

instructions sent out to the colony. We have no know

ledge of them but what we gather in common with the rest

of the public, from most able and most dispassionate state

ment of it published since Judge Reddie’s departure for India,

whither he has been drawn to mend, if possible, his ruined for

tunes—ruined by the oppression of the Colonial Office.

Dr. Reddie was barrister of long standing in Edinburgh.

He had deeply studied the civil law (as well as the Scotch and

English) had spent some time at the university of Leyden, and

Those of our readers who are curious as to the merits of the case, will do well

to refer to the able statement of Dr. Reddie, mentioned in the text, and the no less

able counter-statement published in the Morning Chronicle, 1st Nov. 1848. With

these we have nothing whatever to do; our sole object is to illustrate the scandal and

mischief arising from the irregular and anomalous control exercised under the present

system over the colonial magistracy.—ED.]
