THE

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN

TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE.

No. I.

JULY, 1841,

VOL. I.

TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE.

The facilities now afforded by means

of the press for the dissemination of

every shade of opinion in Religion,

in Politics, in Science, and in Liter-

ature, very naturally leads every

party to desire an organ for the

advocacy of their own peculiar senti-

ments.

To the existence of such feeling

as this, in the province of South

Australia, accompanied with an as-

surance of support on the part of

those concerned for the extension

of the true principles of Temperance,

is to be attributed the establishment

of this periodical, under the title of

THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN TEMPERANCE

ADVOCATE.

The object of this work will be to

adduce such arguments in support

of the principle of Abstinence from all

that intoxicates, and to put upon

record such facts in connexion with

the progress of the Temperance

cause either here or elsewhere, as

will be likely to bring the public to

sound mind with respect to the

use and abuse of intoxicating drinks.

In adducing these arguments, and

collecting these facts, recourse will

be had to the various American and

British Temperance Records, with

number of which the writer of the

above is already furnished, and for

the further regular transmission of

which arrangements will at once be

made.

The plan upon which it is pro-

posed to conduct the Temperance

Advocate is not that of dry record

of passing events, or that of bald

representation of abstract reasoning,

or naked facts, but that of an ad-

mixture of the grave and more soul-

stirring considerations, which this

subject may present, with the lighter

and more finished articles, with

which, we are happy to say, the

Temperance periodical literature of

the day abounds. Such being our

plan, communications, either in the

shape of original articles, or in that

of short anecdotes or interesting facts

will at all times be gratefully re-

ceived, and, as far as our limited

space will allow, our various cor-

respondents will be left to speak for

themselves.

As the Editor of the South Aus-

tkalian Temperance Advocate is

alone responsible for the articles

which appear in its pages, he will,

of course, have to exercise his dis-

cretion as to what shall appear, or

what shall be suppressed, but, as his

sole object, in the establishment of

this periodical, is, to advance the

cause of Temperance by every legiti-

mate means, no communications will

be excluded, because they do not

exactly square with his views, unless,

indeed, they are likely to disserve

the cause they are intended to

promote.

The haste with which the present

number has been got up, has com-

pelled the omission of several mat-
