Fix this textTHE KAFIRS AND THE CAPE COLONY.
Fix this textAt the present moment, the British possessions in South Africa—not-
Fix this textwithstanding the boasted power of England—offer the strange spectacle
Fix this textof the lives and property of the Colonists placed at the mercy of armed
Fix this textbands and hordes of savages, who plunder and murder with comparative
Fix this textimpunity. And yet the Government of this country have used their
Fix this textutmost exertions to remedy this state of things, and reduce the Kafir
Fix this texttribes to submission, to which end one of England’s most active officers
Fix this texthas been lately despatched to the scene of depredation, and a formidable
Fix this textmilitary force concentrated on the spot; but it is more than probable
Fix this textthat the talents of Sir Harry Smith will be exercised in vain, under the
Fix this textpresent system, in endeavouring permanently to secure the peace of the
Fix this textfrontier.
Fix this textA large disciplined force may be marched into the midst of the cloefs
Fix this textand fastnesses of Kaffraria Proper, and penetrate the dense scrubs in the
Fix this textvicinity of the Great Fish River; but as the Kafirs disperse before them,
Fix this textno considerable body will be fallen in with on which to inflict summary
Fix this textand exemplary vengeance—for, indeed, terror is the only mode of in-
Fix this textducing this race to keep their engagements; and whilst the troops are
Fix this textso engaged, the wily savages, penetrating by their flanks, re-enter the
Fix this textColony, carrying death into the home of the settler, and destruction
Fix this textamong his flocks and herds. Yet there will be Sir Harry Smith—the
Fix this texthero of Aliwal—with his formidable array of bayonets and sabres, ready
Fix this textto exterminate the enemy. But unlike the Sikhs on the banks of the
Fix this textSutlej, the savages of South Africa will avoid coming within arm’s length
Fix this textof the gallant warrior. They have no particular wish to try the effect
Fix this textof a charge in line on British regiments ; their tactics are quite of a
Fix this textdifferent kind, and their interests lie in another system.
Fix this textWith a few scattered parties, for observation, in the front of a British
Fix this textforce, the Kafirs, when assailed in their own territory, despatch their
Fix this textfamilies and their stock to the protection of allies far removed from the
Fix this textseat of war. Thus, unencumbered, they hang in small bodies on the
Fix this textflanks and rear of the invading force, cutting off stragglers, intercepting
Fix this textcommunications, and assailing convoys of stores and provisions.
