Fix this textINTRODUCTORY ADDRESS.
Fix this textIn our Prospectus we explained briefly the views
Fix this textwith which we undertake this publication ; but we
Fix this textfeel that our readers will expect us to dwell, in this
Fix this textintroductory article, at somewhat greater length, on
Fix this textthe plan and purposemf our work.
Fix this textUnprecedented as is, in this colony, the appear
Fix this textance of a Weekly Literary Miscellany, we commence
Fix this textour present undertaking in the hope, that thereby
Fix this textmay be supplied that deficiency, which, it seems to us,
Fix this texthas hitherto prevented success from attending similar
Fix this textefforts of this nature. We have been led to believe
Fix this textthat a weekly publication is more in accordance with
Fix this textthe public taste, than one issued at a longer interval;
Fix this textand we now present our subscribers witw our com
Fix this textmencing number, in the humble hope that it may
Fix this textreceive their approbation. We must request their
Fix this textmost favourable consideration for a few unavoidable
Fix this textomissions and deficiencies in our first number, which,
Fix this textwe trust, will not again occur.
Fix this textTo, by far the greater portion of, the inhabitants of
Fix this textthis colony, periodical literature must ever be the
Fix this textmost welcome, and, if rightly selected by them, the
Fix this textmost instructive. The pressing calls of business, or
Fix this textof duty, will ever deprive many of the means of pur
Fix this textsuing literature or science in any better way than by
Fix this textdesultory reading. It is, therefore, a pleasing reflec
Fix this texttion, that, wdtli the general increase of occupation,
Fix this textlias also decreased the difficulty of obtaining useful
Fix this textentertainment and instruction. Information, once to
Fix this textbe found only in expensive books—the ponderous
Fix this textquarto and the laborious folio—is now dispersed in a
Fix this textthousand minor channels, and diffused in so cheap
Fix this texta form as to be accessible to every one. We propose,
Fix this texttherefore, by means of the Colonial Literary Journal ,
Fix this textin some measure, to supply to this colony, , her share
Fix this textof an advantage so desirable, and so conducive to
Fix this textgeneral satisfaction ; being assured, that every advance
Fix this textin the pursuit of knowledge, which the mind makes
Fix this texttowards attaining perfection, must necessarily increase
Fix this textthe rational enjoyments of life.
Fix this text“ Where’er the rays of science cheer mankind,
Fix this textOr learning’s hallowed light illumes the mind,
Fix this textThere knowledge pours her countless treasures forth,
Fix this textAnd points to wisdom, honour, fame, and worth ;
Fix this textThere splendid talents proud distinction claim,
Fix this textThere genius earns a never-dying name,
Fix this textVirtue asserts her power, and merit tries.
Fix this textNo more in vain to bear away the prize,
Fix this textFor truth and justice there with freedom reign,
Fix this textAnd modest merit follows in their train.”
Fix this textIf it be inquired, what are the particular principles
Fix this textwe maintain ; we reply, that we intend to uphold the
Fix this textChristian faith, being equally opposed to bigoted in
Fix this texttolerance, and averse to reckless sectarianism or mis
Fix this textjudged liberalism. No acerbity of party-feeling, either
Fix this textreligious or political, will be designedly admitted in
Fix this textthe columns of the Colonial Literary Journal; but
Fix this textits pages are open to fair and temperate argument;
Fix this textfor, without enquiry, there can be no feeling of
Fix this textsecurity; and, without controversy, the truth cannot
Fix this textwell be elicited.
Fix this textHoping to receive the kind assistance of able Con
Fix this texttributors, we propose to insert, in each number of our
Fix this textMiscellany, Essays, and other articles, on literary and
Fix this textscientific topics.
Fix this textA section of History will occupy a "weekly portion
Fix this textof our pages : with this view, we have selected a writer
Fix this texton universal history peculiarly suitable to our pur
Fix this textpose, and we propose to reprint from his work, in
Fix this textmost instances, od literam. We insert, in this present
Fix this textnumber, the author’s introduction, which renders any
Fix this textfurther comment on this science superfluous on our
Fix this textpart.
Fix this textA select Biographical Sketch will also be frequently
Fix this textfound in this periodical. The utility of biography is
Fix this textnow generally admitted : without it, history is de
Fix this textfective, and chronology uninteresting. By the recital
Fix this textof particular facts, and the display of minute circum
Fix this textstances, the reader’s attention is arrested, and the
Fix this textknowledge of great events imprinted on his memory ;
Fix this textand by the perusal of brilliant exploits, and the con
Fix this texttemplation of magnanimous actions, his judgment is
Fix this textregulated, and his mind enlarged.
Fix this textNew discoveries and improvements in the Arts and
Fix this textSciences will be pointed out to our readers, and com-
Fix this textmented upon ; and the progress of colonial research
Fix this textdelineated and illustrated.
Fix this textWe shall shortly review, together with the latest
Fix this textEnglish publications, whatever productions may issue
Fix this textfrom the Colonial press. It will be our object to
Fix this textfurnish our readers, as far as is consistent with brevity,
Fix this textwith a really faithful account, and, when practicable,
Fix this textan analysis, of the works subjected to our critical
Fix this textnotice.
Fix this textAn entertaining Narrative will be frequently in
Fix this textserted, together with numerous amusing extracts from
Fix this textpopular writers.
Fix this textA description of one of the various Trades will be
Fix this textalso occasionally given, for the. information of our
Fix this textyounger readers.
Fix this textUnder the head of “ The Moralist,” we shall insert,
Fix this textweekly, a small number of moral extracts. At first
