BIRTH

Price Threepence

Edited by Bernard O’Dowd

VOL.

SEPTEMBER, 1919

No. 34

DOUBT.

Where is the haven of our onward winging?

Is it the voiceless bourne from whence we came;

Will silence be the end of all our singing,

Or angels chant the carol of our fame?

From the great darkness into darkness flying?

Or into the rich radiances that stream

In visioned vales from sins of faith undying,

And star-built palaces of happy dream?

Whither so strangely are we onward fleeting

Like birds across sky of storm and shine—

Is it flight that ends with vain wings beating

Beneath rude waves of sorrow’s bitter brine?

With aching pinions onward ever straining

Through hail and icy rains that fall and freeze—

Will soaring stars for ever mock our gaining,

Or are there halcyon isles beyond grim seas?

Henry Tate.

WINTER.

They lie who say he comes in darkening days,

An old man, broken, wandering wearily,

With dirges sadder than the moaning sea,

His scrip blown by the wanton wind that plays

Upon his head, for oft in unleashed ways

I’ve met him, bound down in captivity,

Yet proud and ever struggling to be free,

youth, yet victor in thousand frays.

And have seen the freightage that he brings,

The wattle banners stolen from northern lands,

White clematis around the trees he flings,

Gay heaths are strewn from both his outstretched

hands,

And even while clampt by freezing frost-made

bands

Hope is the motif of the song he sings.

G. B.
