The Bulletin

DARWIN “ FREE AND HAPPY ” (PAGE 271

(< The Bulletin,” Vol. 76 —No. 3950

Wednesday, October 26, 1955

Price 9d.

Registered at the General Post Office, Sydney, N.S.W- Australia, for transmission by Post as Newspaper

No. 269: the Homeland Series by The House of Seppelt.

Blessed by Time,

Canterbury Cathedral

Has an Ancient Story

(CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL is, in

the opinion of many, architecturally

the most beautiful in England. Today

it is vast edifice of beautiful propor-

tions; its glass compares with that of

York its monuments and historical

associations with those of Westminster

Abbey.

The history of Canterbury Cathedral

reaches back to the year 597 when

Ethelbert, King of Kent, granted the

site to St. Augustine. The church which

St. Augustine built was damaged by the

raiding Danes in 1011 and finally

destroyed by fire in 1067. new church

was built on the site by Lanfranc. Some

of the stones from this building are

incorporated in the existing cathedral,

and its design is still retained in the nave

and west transepts. Succeeding genera-

tions added to and improved the

Cathedral, and as it acquired age, beauty

and dignity so it gained in importance,

and today its Archbishop has the special

distinction of being primate of all

England and first peer of the realm.

An impressive feature of the interior

is the magnificent Choir, which was built

in 1175-80 to replace the Norman Choir

which had been destroyed by fire. It

was designed by French architect,

William of Sens, and is unique among

English Cathedrals for its great height

above the crypt, and it is reached by an

imposing flight of steps. This lofty

approach, combined with the tall and

massive piers rising high above the floor,

like some natural forest of stone, has in

every age attracted the admiration of

visitors. The stone used in its building

was brought from Caen in Norway, and

its architecture is especially noteworthy

for the fact that it embodies transition

from the round arch of the Normans to

the pointed arch of the Gothic style.
