Osborne House, Where Even on Holiday Victoria Still Ruled

THE Isle of Wight, one of England’s chief holiday centres, lies off the

south coast and is separated from the mainland by two of the most

famous waterways in the world —the Solent and Spithead. The latter has

been for centuries the chief home anchorage of the‘British Fleet, while the

former, with Cowes as its chief port, is renowned yachting centre, particu-

larly during the annual Cowes Week —a social occasion which ranks with

Henley, Ascot and Goodwood.

Near East Cowes, standing in beautiful wooded park, is Osborne

House, Queen Victoria’s favorite holiday retreat, and it was there that the

Victorian era came to close at her death. The Queen purchased the estate

in 1845, and in the following year Palladian mansion was erected on it by

Thomas Cubitt, later Lord Ashcombe, from designs prepared by the Prince

Consort.

Osborne was viewed with disfavor by the Queen’s Ministers, who, IB

order to wait upon Her Majesty, had to travel from London to Southampton

and then cross the Solent, only to be told upon arrival, in the case of Mr.

Gladstone at least, that “we regret that we are unable to ask you to bo

seated.”

Queen Victoria died at Osborne on the evening of the 22nd January,

1901, after reign of sixty eventful years. Later King Edward VII presented

the house and estate to the nation. It became a- Royal Naval College until

after the first world war, and following the removal of the cadets to Dart-

mouth, it became convalescent home for members of the fighting services.

During the summer months the State Apartments are open to the public

on certain days of the week. They consist of the Durbar Room, the Billiard,

Dining and Drawing Rooms, and they contain collections of period furniture,

curios, bric-a-brac, ornaments, statuary and pictures.
