Fix this textCorpus Christi College, Known to Theologians the World Over
Fix this textFOR over nine-hundred years scholars have been attending lectures at
Fix this textOxford. In the Middle Ages they began to form themselves into
Fix this textcolleges, of which University, Merton and Balliol, all dating back to the
Fix this text13th century, are the oldest. These colleges enjoy a semi-independent
Fix this textdomestic existence, with their own dining-halls, chapels and secluded
Fix this textquadrangles, but they are all closely linked together to form a single Univer-
Fix this textsity, and the knowledge and research of their members is pooled for the
Fix this textbenefit of the whole.
Fix this textIt is the peculiarity of the Oxford system, however, that the college,
Fix this textand not the University as a whole, is the important unit in its life. For this
Fix this textreason the true history of the University begins with the founding of the
Fix this textfirst colleges in the 13th century. All the colleges, the churches and many
Fix this textof the domestic buildings provide a magnificent record of architectural
Fix this textdevelopment in England from Saxon times until long after the Renaissance.
Fix this textThey embody examples of all the chief styles, and much of the work is the
Fix this textmost important of its kind in Britain.
Fix this textCorpus Christi College, illustrated here, was founded in 1516 for the
Fix this textteaching of theology by Richard Foxe, an ecclesiastical statesman, whose

Fix this textthe fateful marriage between James IV of Scotland and Margaret Tudor.

Fix this textFoxe as the emblem of the college.
