The Bulletin

“THE NEW AUSTRALIAN DOG”-mge 20

“The Bulletin,” Vol. 76—No. 3953

Wednesday, November 16, 1955

Price 9d.

Registered at the General Post Office, Sydney, N.S.W„ Australia, for transmission by Post as Newspaper

No. 213: the Homeland Series by The House of Seppelt.

TTAMPTON Court Palace, one of the

largest and most historic of the

Royal palaces in Britain, stands beside

the Thames on the western outskirts of

London. One of its most interesting

features is the famous astronomical clock

which has counted the hours for over four

hundred years, since it was made for

Henry VIII in 1540. It is surmounted by

cupola and bell which are even older

than the clock itself, for they were removed

from the original manor building when

it was demolished to make way for Car-

dinal Wolsey's Palace, later acquired by

Henry VIII.

The clock is set in the mellow brick-

work of Anne Boleyn's Gateway, leading

to the Clock Court. It was made by the

French clockmaker, Oursian, to designs

provided by the German astronomer,

Nicholas Kratzer. It is seven feet in dia-

meter and the dials indicate the hour, the

month, the day of the month, the number

of days since the beginning of the year.

It also shows the phases of the moon

the hour at which the moon appears to

be highest in the sky and, hence, the

time of high tide at London Bridge,

matter of some importance, as the king

frequently journeyed to London by Royal

barge on the Thames.

Although this clock is interesting for

its intricate mechanism, it is particularly

remarkable for its historic associations.

It was known to all of Henry’s six wives

who appeared briefly at Hampton Court

as queens. special suite of rooms was

built for Anne Boleyn while Henry was

still courting her but she had become

queen and had been beheaded before the

rooms were finished. As she passed be-

neath the gateway that bears her name

she must have known the fate that

awaited her at the Tower of London on

May 19, 1536. Her successor at Hampton

Court was Jane Seymour, who died in

giving birth to the boy who later became

Edward VI. Her ghost is said to haunt

the Silver Stick Gallery.

Queen Elizabeth was eating goose on

Michaelmas Day, 1588, at the Palace

when she received the news of the defeat

of the Spanish Armada. In 1647 Charles

was imprisoned by Cromwell in the

Palace, from which he managed to make

temporary escape.

These are but few' of the many his-

toric events which took place at Hamp-

ton Court Palace beneath the clock in

Anne Boleyn’s Gateway.

History Has Woven Mantle Around Hampton Court’s Clock
